YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

TALES FROM THE CRYPT via HBO

While my love of horror was inspired by countless films and my own naturally black heart. No TV series had as much impact on me as Tales from the Crypt did. HBO's anthology television series, hosted by the Crypt Keeper, adapted from various EC Comics stories. I'm not ashamed to say, well maybe a little bit, that I was scared of the shows signature puppet host far longer then i should have been. I blame be exposed to it too early as a child. Even now i still remember being left in the living room alone on a dark and stormy night. That's When i meet the Crypt keeper for the first time. While i didn't actually start watching the show until well into high school. That fateful meeting was my first taste of true horror, and needless to say I've been hocked ever since.

So i was delighted to hear that TNT was Digging up they old bones ordering a two-hour horror block. TNT is looking at reviving the franchise with twist maestro M. Night Shyamalan – yes, the director best known for The Sixth Sense and the more recent The Visit and “Wayward Pines”. Of course we should not forget that while Shyamalan has given us these awesome films. He has also pushed out more stinkers then Michael Bay. I'm slightly conflicted on giving M. Night such an important part of my personal horror history. How ever his recent Successes has proven he's not just a one hit wonder.

So what does all this mean to you, well here are some details.

While details about the programming block are scarce, the two hours are set to consist of short- and long-form storytelling. The “Tales From the Crypt” segment will be based on the original and feature new stories — all exec produced by Shyamalan and his Binding Edge Pictures partner, Ashwin Rajan. The night is expected to include such elements as “Tales” stories, a serialized one-hour anthology that could potentially be several episodes at the end of a season as well as other yet-to-be determined content.

Set to launch in the fall, TNT is expected to announce additional series to be featured in the horror block in the coming months!

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor. To be part of such a beloved brand like ‘Tales From the Crypt,’ something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into,” stated Shyamalan.

I for one can't wait for this to come out. Finally an excuse to duct off the old boob tube. Lets just hope the twist at the end of this is more 'Sixth Sense' and less 'The Village'. Anyone else excited for the crypt keeper to be back on television?

I was so excited when i first heard that tales form the crypt would be coming back to main stream television for the first time in over a decade. How ever fellow komrads i have some bad news to report. While not yet confirmed reliable sources with in TNT are reporting that the latest's incarnation of the show will be lacking its most iconic component. The incarnation of my childhood nightmares, the ghoulish host with the most. The Crypt Keeper who's voice was that of John Kassir. Because HBO owns the rights to the puppet icon. In fact, Kassir himself tweeted, “…Crypt Keeper as we know him is more popular than ever & it’d be a sham/shame not to have him host the show,” This further raised suspicion that this is how the project will plat out.

Instead the iconic framing device will be switched out for an old hooded man with a cane, warming himself by a fire. While being more in line with the original comics and even resembling the Old Witch. It is not the crypt keeper that we all know and love. the one created fro the HBO show, and the sprite of the franchise. Of course it's not like i want to see a new take on the horror icon. We all remember what happened to old Jason when they tried that. It would have to be the original or nothing.

It only gets worse from there with the original plan being an “American Horror Story”-style filming, with 13 episodes of one story line per season. That's only the begin of the ride down the pipes my friends. Not only will there be no weekly “anthology” story. Apparently the first season will have nothing to do with the actual comics. Not to mention it’s scripted by the writers behind the awful “Hemlock Grove.” If rumors are to be believed the first story will focus on voodoo in New Orleans. A more over used trope in cheap horror there is not. With both True Blood and American Horror Story already haven beaten the idea to death.

As it stands M. Night Shyamalan's return of Tales From the Crypt will be in name only. Unless serious changes are made quickly. It seams M. Night will be squatting out another be steaming pile of twist on the horror loving public yet again. So best get ready for disappointment so the shock won't kill us come the series premiere.

Well it's been confirmed by the show curator M. Night Shyamalan on on Twitter. That the Crypt Keeper (as we know him) will not be appearing in the new show. It's not that surprising really considering its owned by HBO after all and networks have a very poor track record of sharing intellectual property. how ever he at least claims the new host will be “…cool and dark.” Shyamalan went on to tweet asking fans, “What are your favorite “Tales from The Crypt” comics and episodes? Looking to adapt some and I’m ready to dig in!

While this would suggest that the new show will continue the anthology episode style. At least keeping some of the originals charm. After all that was what it was known for going back to its very conception. We have yet to get solid confirmation that they will not be going with a serialized story line, one that will feature 13 episodes following one story over the course of a season. Which if you ask me would be a huge mistake on their part.

However what i am most interested in is whether or not John Kassir, who provided the voice for the original Crypt Keeper, will be involved. If we can't have the titular puppet himself we can at least have the iconic voice!
