I think the best post-Apocalyptic film has been THE ROAD. Not a perfect movie by any means, but dark enough, and realistic enough to come close to portraying the way things will be as the human race winds down toward oblivion.

realistic wise i agree with you although for shear post apocalyptic fun i think the new mad max is far better. every frame is like a beautiful work of art. breathtaking despite it bleakness.
