YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!
so while researching for my zombie hunter con costume i fell in love with post apocalyptic cosplay. everything from fallout props to original works. it's just such a cool look and you can do anything with it. it requires little money if you know how to scavenge and helps prepare all of us for what it's gonna be like after they rise. i felt wickedzombies was a good place to bring this to help expand the site. so with all that in mind I'm going to be posting cool stuff i make and design here. and if you catch the bug or maybe if you already have it then i welcome you to post your stuff here too.

thanks komrad I'm glad it came through i think it gives it so much more character this way. now all it needs is some blood and mud to make it complete. and maybe your right about the nails. also this way its legal for me to carry around at like conventions and things. if i was going to add nails they might just have to be rubber or plastic i glue to the bat rather then actual nails i hammer through it.
Thanks I just picked up some pvc to make a belt sheath for it. Im gonna paint it to look like an old rusted pipe that had been broken off.
well i'm kinda on a role now back working on on my costume. I've resumed work on my robe, I'm already done making it so now comes the fun part. destroying the hell out of it. or as we say in the prop world weathering it.
i started off with the edges cutting them to make it look torn and jagged then fraying them out with a wire brush. the look came out great.
then i cut and ripped holes in the fabric using a number of different tools. knives, saws, ever a cork screw. although most of the work was done with an ordinary butter knife. its serrated teeth where just perfect for ripping realistic holes in the fabric. for the under tunic i mostly just made holes near the bottom edge where it would normally get the most abuse. getting snagged on things and dragged around. i most focused on the outer cape, specifically the longer left side. since it comes down all the way to the hand i figured it would take the brunt of the beatings. unlike the right side which just barely covers the shoulder.
the back mostly uniform in its distressing since i would be laying it brushing up against things with it and what not.
of course this is just the first steps in distressing. I'll leave it hanging around so i can beat on it stab it smack it with chains and such as time goes on.that way it avoids look even and deliberate. I'll also add some repairs, sloppily done stitching and patches over holes. i really want to add burlap patch to the left side of the over cape. but i need to find some first.
For now its time to move on to aging and staining. i want this thing to look like its been lived for 20 years. but the problems arise in two places. one this is a robe not normal clothing so the places i would normally stain like knees pants and arms dont apply to in. two the fabric is all off white. meaning i can't really lighten the fabric like you would normally do to show aging in darker fabrics. i really want to get a bleached in the desert sun look but white doesn't really do that to well. i settled on making the fabric darker instead with a tea bath. which is just as it sounds letting the fabric soak in ordinary tea for starters. just as i did to the book pages covering my bible belter. so i took some swatches of my fabric and did some test soaks.and here are the results.
starting from the top are scraps of untreated fabric for comparison. on the left is the over cape and on the left the under tunic. the next pieces down where both soaked in tea for ten minuets. the over cape fabric absorbed a lot more of the tea then did the tunic becoming much darker two dark in fact i think. while the tunic barley darkened at all.
the third swatches down where both soaked for ten minuets again but then taken out and half dipped into the tea a few times. you can really see how the extra dunking darkened the cape material while the tunic stayed mostly the same perhaps darkening only a shade more.
the final where only dunked into the tea for a moment. you can see the clear staining on the cape. this is frankly my favorite color for the cape leading me to thing i should only smear the edges of the cape with tea bags so as to recreate this light staining of the edges like on the swatch. on the tunic side it seams the tea soaked into the fabric leaving a uniform and slight staining.
what do you guys think which one looks best to you, ill take any comments into consideration. as well as any advice you might have. and i'm sorry for the weird ways the pictures rotated I'm not sure why they came out like that.
being the tunic is over the shoulders. the fact that its darker may be a good thing. reason being the shoulders catch all the crap the weather can throw. as for the robe itself. a shade lighter would be normal for that except around the bottom where the feet are. the dust and dirt from the ground ya know.
Yeah I think im gonna lighten the robe with some bleach except the bottom which will get a nice band of black and brown. then I'll darken the shoulder cape just a little with the tea and maybe some coffee.
so since I've all but finished my bible beater i decided i needed away to carry it around with me. i needed to make a sheath for it. but not just any sheath. I've had this idea kicking around in the old noodle to make a PVC sheath but paint it to look like an old rust pipe that had been broken off. and here it is.
i started out with a length of pvc pipe from home depo that was just big enough for the bat to fit into to. then i gut it to length, glued on the end cap and finally made the other end look all jagged. i did this by cutting teeth out by hand with just a hacksaw blade. that all the body work done now i just gotta hit it with a base coat of black then some silver. and cook up some real rust using the vinegar salt and iron filings method. then just rivet a belt loop out of leather or something and its done.
i was thinking cross draw to show it off more, i dont like the back mounted stuff it becomes kind of a pain.
Spent the day at my dads repair shop. Mowing the the grass was a small price to pay for getting to pick through the place. Just barels and barrels of used cap parts. I got a few choice finds but this was the highlight.
I'm pretty sure it started off as part of the heat shielding of a car. But after hammering to shape and riveting on some straps. Its reborn as a bad ass armored shinguard.

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
