YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!
Sometimes surviving means shelter, and it isn’t always as easy as taking over an abandoned building, crawling into a cave, staking out a store-bought tent, or stumbling across an old cabin in the woods. Sometimes a survivor has to make a shelter for themselves, and when it comes to quick fixes and getting a reliable roof over your heard, tarp shelters can be a great way to go.
With a well-made tarp and a bit of 550 paracord, a knowledgeable survivor can easily achieve a bit of seclusion, safety, and shelter from a number of inconveniences or potential dangers like storms, suspicious characters, and SHTF situations. From an A-frame to arrow-head style, ground cover or basic lean-to, there are literally thousands of ways to set up a tarp shelter – some of which are shown in the image below (Image found from various online sources, though the original creator is unknown to me at this time).
However, not all tarps are created equal, and the same can be said for paracord. When it comes to gear meant for outliving the undead, along with any other disasters that might come your way, quality counts.
A while back, the folks over at BUDK were kind enough to send me an 8×10 foot reinforced camouflage tarp made by Texsport, along with a 300ft. spool of Black Savage 7-strand US. made 550 paracord.
The double-sided, fiber reinforced polyethylene material that makes up the body of the tarp, along with the reinforced edges, have proven to be extremely difficult to damage or tear. The grommets, placed every few feet or so around the perimeter of the tarp, make it easy to secure into a variety of positions and forms like those seen above, along with other uses like: water collection, debris relocation, blacking out windows, covering firewood and other important supplies, building a stretcher, and much more… though you’ll need a bit of paracord to help you out along the way. Weighing in at an estimated 2.lbs and easily rolled or folded down to about the size of a newspaper, the 8×10 tarp is a quick and easy piece of gear to pack on or in just about any Bug Out Bag you might have.
As for the 550 cord, it is available in a variety of colors, doesn’t weigh much, is relatively inexpensive, and very easy to pack and carry. Split into varying lengths as needed (I recommend packing no less than two 50 foot lengths in addition to keeping 100-200 feet stored at home for emergencies), a 300 foot spool of paracord can go a long way to help keeping a survivor a live.

i never thought about the tarp portion of this. but if there is one thing i made sure to have. that would be tons of paracord. i even have some of it in my day pack i take with me everywhere. so now i need to snag me a good tarp.
i have a simple diy security system for that. watch,
With a perimeter alarm, something loud and noisy placed about 20 feet away that encircles your entire camp would allow you to at least sleep for a few hours without worrying to much about being attack....
yeah but i like my alarm to alert me and only me. i don't want to broad cast my position to everything with on ear shot. which in a post apocalyptic world will be a huge area. one zombies bad enough but alerting the horde that would have other wise passed me by is worse.
if you have a group. why not just work things in shifts. for instance if you have a group of 4 people. work in 4 hour shifts of 2 awake and 2 asleep. next 4 hour shift wake the ones asleep and the ones that drew first watch can sleep the last 4 hours while the rested ones take watch. a lot more effective then a noisy alarm and no need to depend on batteries. that would seem more effective to me.
true but you may not have a big enough group and your group may not always do what they're told. human error man it gets us every time. have you ever seen a movie where they did that and it worked out. some body always falls asleep or doesn't pay attention. doing a watch shift with an alarm as a backup is probably your best beat. redundancy, its essential.
survival makes a person rethink a lot of things. plus if they have someone with them. it helps pass the time by conversing with the other person. makes a 4 hour shift really blow by. i could see the backup with the alarm if its only a 2 or 3 person group because that would mean one person doing at least an 8 hour stretch. there is where you risk a person getting sloppy or going to sleep. the fatigue factor will be at its highest that way. but taking a shift in a 2 by 2 formation. that breaks the length of the shift and the monotony of doing guard duty majorly. studies have shown that when security guards do a 2 by 2 routine. they operate at peak performance with less potential for mishaps on the job. reason being the constant communication. hence less reliance on other means like mechanical. this is why i always promote having no less then 4 people to a group. any less and they might as well camp in the car on the road because a zombie will have to beat on the window glass to get to you and wake you up.
true but those are people who are trained, it would be great to have a group of gun ho survivalist like us. but you might end up with normal scared people. i still like my alarms can't be to careful with your life.
actually the 2 by 2 routine can be done by anyone. i mean think about it for a minute. how many times have you done something with the help of another that you thought would take a while or be tedious? what happened? it went by faster then you thought right? same thing different circumstances. keeping watch with someone versus being alone is no different. its like staying up all night with a tv. you have the option of watching all kinds of channels and shows that keep you busy. same with having a buddy to talk to on watch. you keep each other awake by talking, joking, and all the while watching and listening all around you. makes 4 hours blow by fast. almost as fast as watching that tv really. so you dont have to be a trained security guard or police officer. you dont have to be trained at all. just do what it takes to keep each other entertained and alert is all you have to do. if you end up a solo act. then yes. you will need an added edge much like that alarm. and i am not saying dont use or make them. i am just saying that if you have a group of 4 or more. the likelihood of needing them will be next to nil. they would however come in real handy if you hold up in an abandoned house or building though. because of it being hard to cover all the bases all the time. one can wire the windows with them as a forewarning system. just number the units and remember what unit is where so you know where to go being they operate on different wireless frequencies.
well unless i meet up with some survivors my group meaning my family is going to be two, maybe three. were four right now but thats counting my 75 year old grandfather who can't make it down the stairs with out crapping his pants. hes a great guy but he can't run he can barely walk. slightly demented and jsut won't survive the worlds end. it's one of the reason i plan to stay in my home for as long as i can. cause when we have to move he can't come with us.
the third is that person i told you about the one with the dog. alcoholic, bi-polar, junky, suicide watch with health problems. if they can get their shit together maybe but i think they're just too much of a liability. their some one i would actually enjoy putting down.
and the one I'm counting on 49 year old auto mechanic manager, former chef so he can turn anything into a delicious meal. hard worker and built like a brick shit house. smoker, high blood pressure, some knee problems, and a thyroid thing that can send him into berserk-er bouts of rage. wich can be a good thing if harnessed.
so yeah i need those alarms.

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
