YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!
Many Survivors and anti-zombie enthusiasts agree that there are five basic things needed to survive most major disasters or Zombie outbreaks – shelter, clean water, fire, food, and fight, with a spattering of first-aid thrown in… because you never know when you’ll need it.
Opinions vary greatly over what order the basic needs need to be met. Some experts are adamant that water should always come first, others say that fire is the way to go, while some say shelter or fight (weapons, signaling, etc.) is most important. But, if you want to know the truth, they are all wrong.
The reality is that priorities, no matter what they are, develop differently within each situation – survival oriented or otherwise. No one person can say, with any real authority to: do this, then this, then this, without potentially putting a life in danger. Simply put, in order to survive, there is no way to know what steps need to be taken in what order, until you’re actually in the thick of things.
Before you even get into performing any of the potentially life-saving things listed below, you have to learn to start thinking critically. You have to learn to look at a situation, your supplies, the condition of yourself and any other survivors around you, and any clear and present dangers – be they dehydration, starvation, exposure, physical threats, medical treatments, attackers, or otherwise.
One of the easiest and most critical things you can do is placing a number on threats, such as: Zombies are chewing on my leg (1), Martha is locked in her room (2). Make sense? Then, one at a time, tackle each challenge that you face and adapt as needed along the way.
Fire – From the ability to purify water, prepare food, sanitize materials for medical treatments, warm a shelter, and much more, fire is among the most important and utilitarian things a survivor can have. Fire is especially important to those attempting survival in cold climates, but it can come in just as handy in warm-weather areas. Remember that fire can feed, water and protect you… no to mention the psychological comfort that comes from a good campfire.
Shelter -Essential to avoid exposure, protect yourself from aggressors, give yourself a home-base to return to, store your scavenged supplies, and add a little comfort back into the world, shelter can be found or made just about anywhere in the world. Caves, fallen trees, tarps, tents, old buildings and refuse, among many other places/things, can be used for shelter from the either very real or proverbial storm that might be on the way.
Water – This is the literal life-blood for survivors, without it we will die, regardless of how much shelter, fire, food or medical treatment we are privy to. But, that doesn’t mean that it ALWAYS comes first on the list of priorities. If you’re exposed to harsh elements, have a serious injury, or some other circumstance takes priority, let it. Yes, a lack of clean water is 100% deadly, but sometimes other things take precedent.
Food – Like water, though in not so an extreme way, a lack of food will destroy even the heartiest of survivors. Without it, survivors will crumble and fall like the squadrons of undead around them… and likely join their ranks. Again, just like water, food is and often a high priority. But, when it comes to getting out of the rain, sun or snow, or escaping a Zombie horde, it might be a little lower on the list than normal.
Fight - The fight category covers a lot of ground and is represented in a variety of forms. From something as simple and important as a good knife, all the way to a sharpened stick, or expertly operated firearm, the need and utility of “fight” has everything to do with available supplies, uses for the tools at hand, and whether there are any immediate dangers or not.
Medical – Many of us out in the Zombie/Survival community agree that, if needed, medical attention should always come first. Survivors in potentially critical conditions – severe lacerations, broken limbs, trouble breathing, non-responsive, etc. – are a priority in nearly every survival situation. What good will a broken and bleeding survivor do? The answer, not much until they’re better. And before you say, “I’d leave them to die.”, remember that survival isn’t just about outliving the other guy, it’s about saving yourself and humanity along the way.

Remember, that when all is said and done, priorities change depending on the situation at hand. This list is in no particular order and does not guarantee the survival or well-being of anyone that uses it. However, I do hope that it can help guide you in the right direction for survival… no matter what comes your way, earthquake, lost in the woods, undead or otherwise.

Actually, I've been in situations in which we were trapped in. The first thought in my mind wasn't even close to what any expert says. The first thing in my head was how the fuck do we get the hell out of here.
Been in tornadoes, blizzards, floods, hurricanes and even when I was out west I went through a few earthquakes. The first things you think about are....
1) HOW THE FUCK DO I GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE?
2) Do I have enough food?
3) Do I have water?
4) Where the hell do I sleep?
5) How do I stay warm?
Those who've been in situations like I have, know that those are the first questions that come to mind. But before anything else hits our minds, the first thing is flight. When that's not possible then you begin to take stock in our supplies and then warmth is always last.
As for medical training or simple first aid, that is never an issue till someone in your group is hurt. But thank the gods I don't have to worry about that. Because I have my CPR and Advance CPR certification renewed every 2 years. The only thing I would like to learn is how to sew someone up. But your senses heighten during a natural disaster. The urgency of being careful and being able to move when help comes keeps the knowledge of CPR, Advance CPR and First Aid at the bottom of the list.
Using an experience I had when I was around 30 years old as an example:
I was in a blizzard in Montana one time, the friend I was with was a survival guy type. Hell, the first thing he wanted to do, just like me was to make our way into town. But there was no way in hell we could do that. So we then went into survival mode. First we found shelter. Then came food. Water we weren't worried about because of the damn snow and then we thought about fire. But still, warmth is always the last thing on anyone's mind. So when someone states that the first thing you should think about is fire, I disagree strongly because I've been in several situations in which no matter what, fire and medical are always the very last thing thought about.
Even those who do survival training tell you that the first thing you search for is shelter, then take stock in your food and water then fire.
Yes, warmth and ways to prepare food is important. But that is the furthest from your mind till either the time comes to prepare food or warmth is needed. It's just that simple.
And when people try to tell me that they don't or won't think that way, I call BULLSHIT on them. I've seen it way to often and have been through it way to many times throughout my life to be told this lie by anyone.
40 years of life and the shit I've been through and seen throughout those years has taught me that the first five questions below are always the first things through everyone's head. And it doesn't matter of what age people are, what kind of training you've had, it's the truth.
1) How the hell do I get out of dodge?
2) Do I have food?
3) Do I have water?
4) Where the hell am I going to sleep?
5) How do I stay warm?
These will always be the first five questions in which we deal with a situation such as a natural disaster or zombies. So re-arranging them in the order you have them listed, isn't realistic. Because the human mind doesn't think or work that way. Trust me when I say I've seen it to many times.
The order of the questions I put above is always the thought process in which we always think in times of a natural disaster...It just human nature to do the fight or flight first, then stock in supplies and then shelter and then warmth. It'll always be that way. That's the way humans have always done it since the dawn of man.
you didn't even read my post but just the list didn't you. my whole post says exactly that. that it depends on the situation. that there is no set list for those top things and that it will always depend on the situation. just because i listed them in a order doesn't mean thats the order to use. the whole post was about not doing that. god be condescending but at least properly read my stuff first.
Yes I did read the whole post. And from the way you had it posted is also the way I took it. So if I took it wrong, I apologize.
sorry if i was a little harsh there but one of the first paragraphs was this

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
