The Countdown Ended

“No energy left inside
All used up until we died,

One by one we stood our ground
By the engulfing swarms they captured our crown,

No spear, no bow nor even a blade
Helped to diminish the walking dead that day

Hiding in shadows running from our fate
To be served as lunch upon silver zombie plates.”


I staired at those words I found scratched into the stone wall for hours, my mouth spilling them out in some incoherent version of English. Running the tip of my finger over each word my mind could just not settle on the fact that the dead had risen and were now roaming the earth freely. I had taken refuge in the old stone tower atop Comanche Hill, the walls were still strong and with only a single door in and out of the tower it was easy to barricade myself in.


As I sat on the top of the tower looking out in a pair of cheap Wal-mart binoculars, I watched the streets below; I could see most of Nacogdoches and Judson road. Vehicles lined both streets a few bodies littered the parking lot of the now closed down Albertsons. I knew there were people in there but not sure how many, of if they had even made it this far long. For right now my only thoughts were getting down the hill to my truck and then home I had to check on my parents. The cellphone had died before I was able to get an answer from dad about him and mom getting everything ready to go and securing the house. If they had gotten out then I would only have to turn the truck around and head out west.

Mom and Dad learned after the whole millennium bug threat to be prepared and it paid off. Their home contained enough supplies to keep a large family stocked for two months, while their cabin was the same last time we talked….. god I hope they made it out.
