Everyone on the ground started working to keep the oncoming zombies at bay while the truck crept towards the dorms at what Brendon guessed to be around six or seven miles an hour. Brendon looked behind them and saw that a horde of at least a couple hundred zombies was following them out of the downtown area. The truck was moving fast enough that the horde wasn't gaining any ground on them but they weren't losing much either, once they got to the dorms there wasn't going to have much time to get the doors secured before the weight of hundreds of undead started pressing against them. They would have to worry about that when they got there though, at the moment their main threat was to their front and sides. The only buildings between them and the dorms were the football stadium and scattered buildings belonging to the university including a large recreation center and two parking garages. Since spring break had begun for the university the buildings had been vacant during the initial outbreak so the only zombies between their location and the dorms were the ones that had wondered into the area since the night before. Luckily that number was small since there hadn't been any living humans in the buildings to draw them into the area.
They did still however have stragglers appearing on the road in front of them and coming off of the side streets that were going to need to be dealt with. Before leaving Wiggins' apartment they had come up with a plan for how to move if they had to leave the vehicles. Each team would be in charge of a direction to cover and Aidan and one other would be in charge of watching their rear to make sure no zombies caught up with them.
After a couple of adjustments made by Griffin, Wiggins and Brendon everybody was in place. Brendon had Aidan and Rebecca with him covering their left side while Griffin covered the right with the help of Megan and Tom. They had sent James and Leslie up to the box of the truck and they had their rifles rested on the roof of the cab and were helping Wiggins clear out the front. Brian was still riding in the passenger seat of the truck but he had the right side of his body out of the window and was using the side mirror to brace his shotgun while he took shots.
It was difficult taking shots while jogging so the people on the ground had to let the zombies get a little too close for comfort before taking shots. After about a block Brendon heard a loud gunshot and turned around to see that the old man had placed the 1911 in a leather holster on his belt and was showing the middle aged man that had been in the car with him how to shoot one of the Nagant rifles.
Brendon went back to focusing on taking down ghouls on his side of the vehicle but before long a string of curses from Griffin brought his attention back to the far side of the vehicle. When he turned around he saw that a group of at least thirty zeds had come stumbling around the corner of the rec building in front of them on Griffin's side and were heading in their direction.
"You two keep an eye on things over here," Brendon shouted to Aidan and Rebecca knowing that the others were going to need more help. He rushed around the backside of the truck as it slowly continued on. The man in the leather coat that they had saved from the truck was jogging behind the vehicle keeping an eye on their backs with the SKS as he had been told. Brendon told him to follow him since they were going slightly faster than the horde trailing them. The gap between them and their pursuers wasn't as wide as he would have liked though, the fastest of the zeds following them were less than two hundred feet behind them and were probably moving at about five miles an hour.
