"Hey guys, looks like we have a tail back here," Griffin's voice said over the radio. "There is a car that was traveling behind us on the main street that turned off where we did, they're staying about fifty yards behind us and it looks like there are two people in front, can't tell if there are more in the back."
"Do any of them look like they might be sick or infected?" Wiggins responded.
"From here they all look healthy," Griffin said. "I could put out some warning shots to let them know to stop following us or I could leave them alone, what do you guys think?"
"Just let them follow us," Brendon chimed in. "If they still don't show any signs of infection by the time we get to the dorms we'll let them in with us and check them for bites there. Just keep an eye on them."
"Sounds good to me, I'll let you guys know if anything changes back here," Griffin said. The small convoy continued on through the neighborhood without any significant problems. Ethan turned out to be rather proficient at navigating the lead vehicle through the confusing streets and before long they broke out of the residential area and returned to the street they had been following north. Brendon took a look around and saw that they were by the county court house. As they passed the building he saw a number of bodies laying near the entrance and bullet holes in the few glass doors that were still intact. Other glass doors had been shattered and Brendon guessed that the reason that there weren't any zeds to be seen outside of the building was because the police and security officers inside hadn't been able to keep them out.
They continued to follow the street to the north taking them through the edge of the downtown area. The first few blocks looked to be relatively clear and only had a handful of crashed and abandoned vehicles since like the business district most people probably hadn't made it to work in the morning. It was when they approached the city's main street that the chaos became apparent. This section of the city had a particularly thick concentration of bars where of-age college students and other people in their early twenties often went to bar hop on weekends. The previous night had been the beginning of spring break of the University which was only a handful of blocks to the north and there had likely been hundreds if not thousands of college students filling the downtown bars. As they started passing the bars he could see hundreds of undead men and women wondering about the area, almost all of them dressed for a late night at the bars. The news had said that the outbreak had started in the northern part of the city around ten the previous night which meant the undead had probably swept through the downtown area sometime before last call while everyone was crammed into the crowded bars and dance clubs. The area was littered with crashed vehicles and blood stained streets and Brendon could still hear loud music coming from inside one of bars since nobody was left alive to turn it off. The loud music was probably the reason so many zeds were still lingering in the area since they seemed to be attracted to sounds. There was always a heavy police presence in the downtown area, especially on weekends like this one. Squad cars sat idle with their light bars still flashing and shell casings and spent shotgun shells could be seen on the ground. At least one if not more of the cops must have figured out that headshots worked since there were a number of bodies on the ground.
What concerned him most was the number of moving bodies in the area, he hadn't seen this many in one place before and he was afraid that if they were able to swarm the vehicles their sheer numbers would be enough to prevent the vehicles from pushing through. "Wiggins, try to keep us moving through here as quick as you guys can, I don't think it would be a good idea to let this many of them swarm us."
