Brendon's Apartment
Saturday March 12 10:03 A.M.
Day 1
With everybody geared up and all of the bags sealed it was time for them to go. Brendon picked up his ruck and instructed the other two to follow with more bags as he walked over to the balcony window. He slid open the glass door and stepped outside for the first time in hours. There were a number of infected people in the parking lot and as soon as they spotted him they all let out excited moans and began lumbering in his direction. The news had stated that head shots consistently killed these people but he wanted to see it in action before they all tried to get to his SUV. He put his ruck on the ground next to him, flipped on his red dot and lined up the reticle with the head of a bloodied middle-aged man that was about forty yards away attempting to jog through the parking lot. He was moving directly towards Brendon so it was an easy shot. As soon as he squeezed down on the trigger he saw a red mist spray from the back of the man's head as he crumpled to the ground and laid there motionless.
He had a quick detach suppressor on the end of the rifle but even with it attached to his AK the gunshot made enough noise to get the attention of even more of the crazed people in the immediate area. Brendon bent over and rested the front of his AK on the railing around the balcony and began snapping off shots at the approaching infected. Since they could barely manage a slow jog they made reasonably easy targets at closer ranges and he managed to put most of them down on the first shot.
He heard a gunshot to his right and looked over to see that Aidan had rested his AR-15 on the railing and was taking shots as well. Aidan didn't have as much practice with moving targets but it looked like he was doing almost as well as Brendon was. Plus the AR-15 had a ACOG scope on top that would help make distance shots with a small red dot on top of the scope for close range work. Within a couple of minutes they had cleared out the immediate area but Brendon could still spot more people in the distance that were moving in their direction. He knew that there were probably enough infected people in the city that they could keep this up all day without there being an end to them so he decided that they had taken out enough of them for the time being.
He had tied lengths of 550 cord to each of the bags with knots in them for better grip earlier not wanting to simply throw the bags down to ground level fearing that the contents may be damaged upon impact. He placed his ruck on the railing and grabbed the 550 cord with both hands as he let the ruck tip over the edge. It slid down a few feet before he was able to get a tight enough grip on the chord to stop the bag's descent. Even through his nomex gloves he felt heat from the friction caused by the sliding cord and was glad that he had remembered to make sure they all had gloves on. He lightened his grip just enough to let the ruck slowly descend to the ground then threw what was left of the cord over the edge once he saw the bag touch the ground. To his left and right Rebecca and Aidan were both doing the same with their bags and neither of them seemed to have any major issues getting the bags down. They each had to lower a second bag in order to get all of their supplies to the ground level. Once everything was down Brendon looked over to his white Explorer that was parked about forty feet away, pulled out his keys and hit the unlock button twice. He heard the distinct noise of his car doors unlocking and decided that there wasn't anything left for them to do before leaving.
The three of them went back inside and Aidan and Brendon both put fresh magazines in their rifles. Aidan and Brendon both went over to the front door which was still visibly shaking from all of the pounding on the outside. They pulled the couch back into the living room where it would be out of their way. Aidan went returned to the door and looked out the peep hole for a few moments. "Looks like there are still the same three outside," Aidan said as he backed a couple steps away from the door
"Swing it open and get out of the way, I'll get them from here," Brendon responded as he positioned himself ten feet from the door and brought up his rifle. Aidan positioned himself to the side of the door the hinges were on and reached across to disengage all of the locks. Once he was ready he placed his hand on the lock and looked to Brendon. "Do it," Brendon said. The words were barely out of his mouth when Aidan swung the door open and backpedaled off to the side into the kitchen to get out of Brendon's way. Sure enough the same three men were standing outside, two of them with large wounds in their chests. Brendon lined up his sights with the closest of the wounded two and squeezed down on the trigger before he had made it two steps into the room. He crumpled to the ground and the second injured man stumbled over him as he fell. Brendon shifted his aim over to the uninjured man that had made it past the first ones body and put a round between his eyes before he had time to cover half of the ground between Brendon and the door. There was a third louder gunshot and the third man fell to the ground with the other two and Brendon realized that Rebecca had taken a shot from her position off to his right.
