brother. i never said they would ignore it. i only said they would scarff them up as trade items in the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse. i agree with going with what you are comfortable with. i was only trying to improve upon it with my suggestion. not sway from it. and the way i was trying to improve on it and her chances was suggesting the Cold Steel Bokken. it gives the resiliency of the indestructible polypropylene and the heft and feel of the sword she loves. just a humble recommendation to help is all. and i must admit i like your taste in the axe Komrad Krow. i have chosen the M48 Hawk produced by United Cutlery for the close up stuff but chosen the Cas Hanwei Hero's Axe. it is a double edged axe that can give me a swing both forward and reverse without turning the axe head. has an awesome weight and feel. in my opinion surpasses the standard camp axe.
Cas Hanwei Hero's Axe
or if you want to go something a little more indestructible in the handle area. the good old fasioned fire axe.
Fire Axe
one can NEVER go wrong with a good axe. lol. its been the peasants weapon for centuries. i imagine it will be here for use for centuries more. a tool to some. a barbarians weapon to others. but definitely a tried and true weapon in the world. not as light as the bokken and nowhere near as elegant a weapon as the sword. but a more available weapon by far there is not.
Another weapon I tend to favor is a single edge axe. It has a long enough haft that you could keep some distance from the biters while delivering a blow that at it's apex swing, would sever the spinal brain stem with out getting hung up. Also, my axe has a blunt edge that focuses the inertia to a fairly small area, which allows for more force to generate at the point of impact. Velma has a good point about going with what you are proficient in. I have used the bokken and the axe in training for many years and would feel comfortable with both. Velma has long experience with the use of katanas, so she should feel better with that. I disagree with the idea that swords would be ignored in favor of other close range weapons by the vast majority of survivors. quite a lot of folks view swords as post apocalyptic gold for melee weapons. The sword has been in the fabric of pop culture, and has an almost mystic reverence attached to those who would view themselves as post Zday warrior types. Just saying
oH! I never said i disagree with them but your question is about personal preference right? So mine would be the sword. I am perficiant in other weapons as well and learning more every day. Though don't quite agree that they will be as handy to pick up along the way as everyone thinks they are. As far as guns and knives and such they will probably go real quick once everything starts. If you take that into account then Itpretty much puts them on the same level of availability as things like the sword or the bokken. If you take into account that everyone is gonna be reaching for the guns and hand knives right away and not many are gonna be looking for the less common weapons then there will probably be about the same availability of both kinds once a few days pass... Just a theory though.
you say that you have 15 years with a sword. in my opinion. Komrad Krow has a very good point when it comes to the bokken. and i cant help but disagree when it comes to the availability of weapons. they wont be just laying around reason being is the ones who break theirs will be grabbing them up just as much as the ones who will grab up just for trade purposes. so if anything. i would go with the kind that is hard if not impossible to break. i invested in Cold Steel brand polypropylene melee weapons. those things are the toughest things yet and due to the fact they are made of the same polypropylene that the police batons are made of. they will never warp, crack, splinter, or break. and they even make bokkens of this same stuff. and since they have the same weight and feel of a katana. you could say they are a sword swingers dream. lol.
Crow I agree... Close quarters bad! LOL... Which is why I get so much grippin about Me running this big zombie apocalypse website and not knowing how to shoot a gun... not that i havent wanted to learn... lol... just everyone thinks im to much of a cluts or to crazy to have that skill... but i plan on learning... one of my writers is going to teach me. he lives close to me and has done it for years. so I am very excited about learning that skill finally!... LOL... everyone else on the other hand are... well... lets just say as soon as the word gets out then i will have a few ex's going into the cheating assholes witness protection program... LOL
Well... The thing I think is most important when chosing a hand to hand weapon is experience... ( I have had many of debates about that BTW... LOL and still believe unless I can download 15 years of weapons training on another weapon as I have with a sword then im pretty much danin with the bitch who bring me... lol ) and yes it could break but also there is not just one sword in the world... you take care of it as any weapon and when it starts to ware you get another,,, like any other weapon...
As a student of Kempo, I would opt for a Boken as a melee weapon. It has the heft of a good sword, is generally made of hard-to-break materials, and it does not need to be sharpened. But the goal, if one can manage, is not to be in a situation that allows for close quarters.
its been my experience that even the best cared for blade will break after repeated strikes to bones. have you ever thought about using a bludgeoning tool versus a sword? after all. it would be a very lousy afternoon for the one who has their blade weapon break in the middle of a zombie fight. lol.
Well I would use my kata sword because I have 2 third degree black belts and have studied with it for 15 years. I might add a few hidden knives in some conspicuous yet handy places just in case! :)
okay. here is a question for all to answer if they want. lol.
when it comes to melee weapons. what would you use and why?

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
