YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!
I'm a huge fan of Romero's Dawn of the Dead. That said, I don't think that much of the follow-up, Day of the Dead. Land of the Dead is better, but of all the follow-ups in the Dead series, but I think this one is the best.
Even though it is years after Dawn, Diary picks up at the beginning of the outbreak. Romero tries the "found footage" approach as he features a group of student filmmakers who just happen to be making a low budget horror film when the zombies start popping up. Their dramatic movies switches quickly to a documentary as their director locks in on opportunity.
We follow the students as the get in an RV and head across the state and they figure out what is really going on.
Romero makes this one inventive with interesting characters and situations. For the most part, he does a great job of including a nice vein of social commentary without becoming preachy -- for the most part.
The film almost goes off the rails at the end, but Romero pulls it back. All-in-all, I think it's Romero best film in years.
