Ashes by Ilsa Bick

I just finished listening to the audiobook of Ashes, by Ilsa Bick.  This is not your typical zombie book and may not really be a zombie book at all unless you broaden the definition.

It's a part of a planned trilogy.  The 2nd book has been released and the final book comes out sometime this year.

The basic premise is that the country and probably the world has been zapped by a EMPs.  A vast majority is killed in the zap.  The survivors consist of a lot of people around the age of 60 and above plus a slim amount of young people.   These young are divided into the Spared (living), the Awakened (people granted with special powers), and the Changed (feral creatures who attack and eat the living).

The main characters is Alexandra (Alex) who links up with different people throughout her survival journey and suffers major heartbreak.

There's some excellent writing in this book without being too florid.  I can highly recommend it.
