According to insider information gathered by gaming website Kotaku, EA is looking to expand its Dead Space franchise into other games and genres. Although spin-offs are not new to Dead Space – a rail shooter, puzzle game, animated films, and comic books already flesh out the game’s universe – this marks a foray into drastically different territory for the survival horror series.

Among the proposed new games are a first-person shooter, a flight simulator, and “an Uncharted-like game.” The more action-oriented genres come at the behest of new management at EA, who stress that the current games don’t sell as well as games like Uncharted. The corporate shake-up almost resulted in the cancellation of Dead Space 3, though Kotaku’s anonymous source reassured fans that the third game is still in production.

Survival horror games typically thrive on forcing players to fend off enemies alone, ratcheting the tension by increasing a sense of isolation. The upcoming PSN game Amy is taking a different approach by giving players an AI companion.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the game's publisher reveals a load of info on the downloadable PS3 game. Your character, Lana, wakes up after a comet has crashed into Earth and unleashed a horrifying plague. Lana is infected, though she hasn't yet turned feral like many other survivors in Silver City. She meets up with a girl named Amy, who has some very special capabilities. The mute child can reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible, and she's also able to temporarily cure the infected.

The game is being developed by Paul Cuisset, a veteran designer best known for his classic game Flashback. Check out the video below to see the game in action.
