i haven't seen the film but i would say it might be both. If there are two things you should never do in a horror movie, its pagan rituals and mocking the devil. doing both at the same time is just asking for demonic shit go down. as for the shot gun i blame it on poor writing. never introduce an object and then do nothing with it. it gives the audience the feeling your having. we expect when we see something introduced that it will be important later on, the old chekhov's gun.

Chekhov's gun is a dramatic principle that requires every element in a narrative to be irreplaceable, with anything else removed. Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there.
