never heard of it. is there a link so those like me can check it out?
Here is the link you requested. you can also find it on Netflix. check it out and let me know if you found it as ridiculous as i did.
Yes I did watch it on Nat Geo...I figured it was Nat Geo's way to try and capture some of the zombie genre to their channel and I really think they swung and missed...
yeah, that's a good way to put it. furthermore, i think someone ought to just blast max brooks in the face.
after seeing the opening on the video. i do remember seeing this show. found it very disappointing at best. i always felt when it came to The Zombie Survival Guide he wrote. that he did his homework in some ares and nowhere NEAR enough in others. like for instance the section on the suggested items of a bug out bag. he made good suggestions. BUT HE LEFT OUT THE FOOD AND WATER! lol. how are you gonna make it on no food or water. he did mention good items to store water in. even mentioned water purification tablets. but NOT the food area. just a mess kit to eat the non existent food on. and a BICYCLE? REALLY?? a horde of zombies can come up on you out of nowhere. when that happens. who the hell wants to be on a mountain bike when that happens??? I want some good old fashioned DETROIT STEEL between me and them when it comes down to it. the show had others speaking on zombies. and when it came down to it. i think the ONLY reason Max Brooks was there is because of his half researched book and nothing more. and the statements he made i also found to be anything but helpful. a very sad disappointment that show was. you would think he would have at least done more research once the book came out so when he spoke. it would be more informative in cases like this. guess i was wrong. lol
yeah, his views on suitable weapons were laughable. i understand the book was meant to be humorous, and it was, but now with so many people referring to it like the word of god, survivability in that situation will plummet.
world war z was much better, but still under researched and under developed in a lot of areas.
what really kills me is his endorsement of the katana sword. do you know how many years it takes to master that thing? if you been taking martial arts training for years. its a viable weapon. but for the average joker off the streets to use it? during the zombie apocalypse is NOT the time for a crash course in ANY weapon. the machete is one of the best most viable weapons that can be used by the every day joe. look at the history of Mexico and South America for god sake. its been the weapon of peasants for decades. the man was totally winging it in some sections. well versed in others. what i do to prepare when it comes down to it. i mix what is there that made sense. marry it with information that is more sound. and go from there. i NEVER rely totally on Max Brooks words. i would be zombie chow otherwise.
OH HELLO NO!!! I wouldn't totally rely on Max myself. A few things I do agree on with Max, but not all of his suggestions are viable. I do have a copy of his book on my Kindle and in my bag, but I also have in my bag the Zombie Combat Manual...That book is a must in everyone's BOB...But I also have many other types of survival guides on my Kindle...
But true experience is the true survival manual...Between all the zombie survival guides and even just outdoor survival guides in which I've invested in getting, my family and me are ready...Though I am lacking on the equipment, in which I'm working on, we will be some of the few that survive...
you're right, experience is the best manual. however, WHAT your trying to survive is rather important.
for example, i have quite a bit of training and experience in urban warfare against organized, motivated and well armed opposition. my survivability in situations like that is pretty fucking high. i have some training in woodland and jungle warfare. my survivability there is higher than average. i have NO training or experience against foreign military forces. my survivability is questionable.
knowing what to train for is key. the problem with brooks is that people like him are giving facts about an opposing force when no such facts exist. better to suggest and prepare for as many eventualities as possible than to be surprised at the worst possible moment.
yeah, the katana was funny. first of all, a quality katana costs more than a high end assault rifle with a crate of accessories. i wouldn't trust a case of beer on the fact that one bought from the local martial arts supply store won't snap somewhere between the first and third use, much less my life. and yes, using one efficiently takes years of practice, despite what The Walking Dead would have you believe. as for finding one during scavenging, you're much more likely to find a loaded gun than a katana in the US. and IF you somehow do come across one, just ask its previous owner how well it worked out for them, they'll still be shambling about somewhere nearby.
for anyone thinking a melee weapon is a great idea, i suggest you take a baseball bat and go smack a tree a few times. the average person will get, what... 4, maybe 5 lethal swings before their arms go numb? then you're zombie chow, guy.
machetes are great as a last resort. but their real power is in the psychological effect. i spent some time in South America with the Army, i've seen their effects. once again, i suggest taking one to a tree. machetes are meant for cutting foliage, not human bodies, and they dull quickly. an off the shelf blade will NOT severe a human head on the first strike- it'll embed itself, forcing the user to pry it free. that's a lot of work to get back your weapon. once again we have zombie chow.
in my opinion, the only option is in rapid fire firearms. military style are the best bet. why? because they're ergonomic, lightweight, magazine fed, easily maintained and require little familiarization training. get several, master them, and constantly stock up on more and more ammunition. and remember, you don't need a head shot the first time- i don't give a fuck what anyone says, a round that takes out the femur, shin or knee cap will slow ANYTHING down.
just for the fuck of it, i wrote a 'journal' entry directly in response to The Zombie Survival Guide. There's the first part of the incident inspiring the rant if you're curious. The second half is forthcoming.

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
