Wicked Zombies

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

I searched the site and saw some discussions about The Walking Dead, but not a lot about the current season.  (Maybe I missed it -- if so, let me know.)

What did people think?  I know a lot of people love the show, but I also know a few who don't think much of it.  And these aren't people who would completely ignore it for romantic-comedies.  These are people who like horror and sci-fi.

I've been excited about the show when I first heard AMC was making it.  So much so, I went out and bought the first collection so that I could get a jumpstart on it.  (I like zombies, can you tell?)

Anyway, I've loved the show since the first episode.  It's not perfect.  In some ways, I find it a very frustrating show because while it has great ambition, it doesn't always met its own expectations.  Much of season 2 lagged quite a bit as the hung around the farm.

This season started strong and the first 8 episodes were quite good.  It came back from the break and, while it was good, it throttled back on the pace.  Some of this was good and some not so good. The governor is a great villain and they used him quite well -- most of the time.

Here's what I like about the show:

  • It's got zombies.
  • It's got good production values and with an ambitious scope
  • The special effects are good
  • The characters are compelling

Here's where the show false short:

  • Some of the character development is weak and the characters don't make the best decisions
  • Characters sometime jump through plot hoops that just don't work all the time
  • Sometimes the direction isn't all great (e.g. Dale's death in season 2 -- that zombie appears out of nowhere, and slow moving zombies shouldn't do that)

What it does well, outweighs what it doesn't, but I'm still disappointed at times.  When I look at shows that I have found fantastic in the past (Lost, Battlestar, The Shield, Homicide, & Breaking Bad), I see that they avoid the mistakes that TWD has consistently made.  If TWD can starts limiting those missteps, then I think it can ascend to the same level of the best shows.

Despite my issues, I still love the show and am and will be a devoted fan.

yes we have had a few discussions about the current season. I still like it...I agree some of the character development isn't quite there (one of my biggest things is the way Michonne never speaks, she never explains anything, she just stares at you for a few seconds and says "no" lol). I was actually upset that Andrea died. I wasn't one ranting about shes some big whore and kill her off and blah blah, she was in a realistic situation given the circumstances...now she definitely should've killed the governor when she had a chance though...still, I always liked her.

The way they did Merle was a head scratcher. They spent that entire episode developing him, making him go deeper and really come around then BAM! dead... but I understand the shock value and impact on it.

And what the hell happens now??!!?? bus full of people arrive at the prison while Carl is acting stank towards everybody. How will they incorporate such a large group now...I'm curious to see where it goes.

And finally...when the crowd from Woodbury went to invade the prison...they knew they were going there to fight, attack and kill Rick's gang...so why then after a few shots were fired at them did they flee and then scold the governor like "that was a slaughter" I wasn't too sure about that. Obviously they had to expect some defense from the group.

It's definitely gone away from the focus being surviving zombies, but that's to be expected. You can't have a compelling show without person to person drama

when it came to the women of TWD like Lori and Andrea. i always felt that people were being to hard on them. they only reacted like some would in the real world.

lets take Lori first. after Rick got shot and put into a coma. that is when the world goes to shit. then add the fact that Shane tells her he is dead. double jeopardy. now after starting to come to grips with it, she started to move towards the one person that was her hero from the time the dead walked and offered some stability. Shane. and it was a mutual move between the two of them. yet everyone is like "THAT BITCH! KILL HER OFF!" or "THAT WHORE! TURN HER INTO ZOMBIE CHOW!" and the list goes on. nobody gave account to the fact that when Rick walked into the camp that she cut Shane's ass off in a hot second and kept it that way until the day she had the baby and died.

now lets look at Andrea. up until her sister died. she kept it together mentally. then after her sister died. she began to fragment a little bit. case in hand. the CDC center. when it was set to self destruct. she wanted to kill herself. had it not been for Dale, she very well could have done it. but by putting himself in the line of fire to. Andrea snaps to and goes out of the CDC with Dale but still a broken soul.so now after this we move ahead. now that she has had some weapon training. her head start5s to turn a bit. from victim to fighter. granted that doinking Shane was not the smartest move. but it helped her get more control of her life and what the hell, they were both single. so who cares. but the internet crowd starts again. "THAT WHORE! SHE WOULD SCREW A FENCE POST! KILL HER OFF!" or this one better yet "SHE'S NOTHING BUT A POWER WHORE! SHE WILL SCREW THE FIRST GUY THAT CAN TAKE CONTROL!" and yet again the list can go on and just for doing the horizontal mambo in a car with Shane. Hershel had control as to who stayed or left but i didnt see Andrea making moves on him. now we move forward a tad to where she is now in Woodbury. she now falls for the local cult leader head over heals. and why not? he was showing her a totally different face then the face he would show before killing someone. but yet we hear the same shit as listed above. nobody took into account that the worm was turning concerning Andrea when Rick attacked Woodbury to rescue Maggie and Glen and had to go back yet again for Daryl. in my opinion. Andrea acted more then normal under the circumstances.

now when it comes to other characters like Meryl, Carl, and the people of Woodbury. i said it before and i shall say it again. it totally sucks that they kill of Meryl's character when not only had they spent time to open up the mans persona just to kill him off later. that one will always baffle me. now as for Carl. i do feel he has become homicidal and needs to be brought back in hand or we will be looking at something worse then the Governor. and now that they have more people to expose him to that still have rational thoughts and feelings. i think that will help Rick to reign him in a bit and turn him into the skilled leader he could be. and i cant help but agree with you on one thing Komrad. when you have people in the mix no matter what size. there will always be that person to person drama. i mean after all. it would be kinda boring if all the show was to consist of was WAKE UP, LEAVE THE PRISON, KILL ZOMBIES, GO BACK, EAT THEN SLEEP, THEN REPEAT. each person brings in a new dynamic and twist to the story. so by adding some of the people from Woodbury will not only help in this. it will keep the story more active and the show last longer.

I sometimes wonder if they killed off Merle because Michael Rooker either didn't want to be on a regular series or they couldn't afford him.  While Michael Rooker isn't a household name, he's been around a while and probably cost a lot more than some of the actors.

What I liked most about Merle is that he brought a lot of tension to the group.  Drama is interesting when there's a lot of tension.  Because he was so unpredictable, he was a great source of tension.

i always thought it had tension anyway. reason being drama and tension tend to walk hand in hand. they also make a good wild card it any story.

Been Awhile, BUt I'm still Alive

Greetings Everyone,    Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
