YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

Survival Maps. There Is Always A Way.

Survival Map

Smart phones and online maps can only get you so far as they are often inaccurate, outdated, and only reliable when you’ve got access to electricity. Real-world survival shouldn’t be left up to whether you’ve got a fully charged cellphone battery or not… it should be something that you can count on at all times… regardless of the wifi networks and cell towers in the area.

Utilizing printed maps during an evacuation, bug out, or supply run, can greatly increase your chances of survival. And a well marked map, in the right set of hands, can easily lead you to to salvation from the Zombie hordes. Local and surrounding area maps can be found at most gas stations, some bookstores, and many libraries… but taking the time to augment and customize the map to your needs is what really makes a difference.

What you need – Local area map and surrounding city/area maps, colored markers, and a waterproof bag or map case.

CREATE A KEY: Simple color codes or symbols based keys, like the ones seen below, can make a big difference when it comes to reading a map in low-light or high stress situations like a Zombie attack, or other major disaster.

Red = Medical Supplies
Green = Food / Water
Blue = Gear
Black = Danger

H = Hospital / Medical
F = Food
W = Water
G = Gear
S = Safe House

Add and adjust colors and abbreviations as you see fit, but remember that the more complicated you make it, the harder it will be to read. Once you’ve created the key, take the time to memorize it and don’t forget to always keep it with your Survival Map… just like a lock, a map isn’t any good without a key.

WHAT TO MARK: Clearly mark your home base, workplace, and other locations that you frequent for long periods of time such as school or friends and family members homes. Work your way outward in a 1-mile radius from your home, marking important landmarks and locations as you go.

Primary Locations -
Hospitals and Pharmacies
Fire / Police Stations
Grocery Stores, Farmers Markets, and other small markets
Gas Stations
Department Stores and Sporting goods stores
Hardware Stores
Potential Safe houses
Airports / Train Stations / Harbors

Secondary Locations -
Tattoo Parlors (Medical Supplies)
Veterinary Clinics (Medical Supplies)
Pawn Shops (Misc. Gear)
Restaurants (Food, Water, possible Gear)
Junk Yards / Recycling Centers (Building Materials and Supplies)
Storage Facilities (Gear, Supplies, Misc)
Car Lots (Vehicles)
Military Depots and Bases (Weapons, Medical, Food, Water, Vehicles)

Supply depots, dangerous areas, and possible routes in and out of town are necessary for any good Survival Map, as well as potential bug out locations and check points for meeting up with friends and family. Only mark locations that are both viable and valuable options, there’s no need to complicate your map with a bunch of useless information… like where the nearest candy store is. Once you’ve completed a 1-mile radius, add another, and another, until you have a completed Survival Map of your surrounding area and cities.

EQUIP: Protect your Survival Map from damage by laminating it or storing it in a waterproof bag or map case. Use clear containers that are easily secured and accessible. Equip your BOB, E-kit, and EDC, with a copy of your Survival Map, they don’t do any good left at home in a drawer.

MAINTAIN: Routes and important locations can change, so make sure to routinely update and check your Survival Map for accuracy. Make adjustments as you need. Practice using your Survival Map on a regular basis, testing travel times and looking for improvements and new locations to mark… it’s an on-going, but important process.Survival Map update

A Survival Map can be as detailed or lack-luster as you want it to be, it all depends on how much time and effort you put into it. But when it comes to the basics of survival, knowing where you are is one of the most important things you can do. We recommend that anyone that can read, takes the time to make a custom Survival Map… it really could mean the difference between life and death or easy living in an apocalyptic world.

i feel ya there. lol. there are times i cant get there to being on the far side of my town.

in addition to this i would also suggest what i just started doing, make a separate map or your neighborhood and mark down the supply's and strategic factors of your neighbors homes. just by walking or driving around your neighbor hood you can spot lots of things that would be useful to know after the zombies rise. like what houses stock firewood, which house are the best defended from zombies have fenced in yards. like for me the house next door has a pool. which means massive water storage, the house next to that the guy runs a pool cleaning business has two work vans always parked in his drive way. lots of usefully chemical including pool shock for disinfecting the water i get from the other guys pool. mapping out what supply's the people living near you have now will make your looting trips after z-day way more effective and profitable.

so next time you got nothing else to do, go for a walk through your neighborhood with a pen and a pad and take some note. or if you want to seam less creepy about it most phones have some sort of voice memo, or built in recorder. put on a headset and dictate as you case the neighbors.

And don't forget to peek in the windows and check to see when the neighbors are home and when they are gone...(LOL)   Do that crap in my neighborhood and you're getting shot dude...(LOL)

not if its your own neighborhood dude, and you'd be surprised what you can learn from the sidewalk. i know what houses stock firewood, which ones have grills and their for propane, a valuable resource no ones gonna think to take with them when they evacuate. which house have dogs that may get left behind. and their a few with solar panels on the roof so free electricity. looting will be a necessity when things go to hell and the stores will be hit first. so I'm gonna avoid them and go strait houses as the neighbors run to their deaths. i got a paramedic two blocks down with drugs and radio equipment. three blocks down the other way the guys keeps bees, free honey. i won't take from the ones that are still there but dead or run off is fair game. better to know in advanced then take the risk when the time comes for nothing. and all i have to do is go for a walk and keep an eye out.

Got the water collection and storage worked out. The local dirt track here has a large 50,000 gallon water truck with a huge ass pump on it. The Tennessee River is only a mile or 2 away, so the only thing that will need to be done is purifying the water...Takes like 10 minutes to fill up the truck from the river...So water will not be to much of a problem...Plus two, most of the apartments around here will be evacuated, so I'll still have like 40, 50 to 60 gallon water heaters to drain for purified water...Plus the stored water we already have, we'll have like 2 to 3 thousand gallons of water to work with....

   Propane, there are like 5 gas stations and 4 local stores that sell the large tanks of propane...Plus I know where to get the small bottled propane for coleman stoves, which will supply a way to cook food and to heat the apartment...

   As for firewood, there are enough houses within a 1 square mile radius of my apartment who keep firewood all year round...So the only thing I will have to find will be a pot belly stove...Which I'm working on as we speak...

   As for food, I know where 3 big hunters keep their food supply...So raiding their smokehouses and their freezers will keep us in meat for about a year at least...

   I think I have some things figured out and where to go to get the stuff, it's just the man power is something I lack. But I think I can pull everything off to the point to where my family will thrive...

good for you see knowing your surroundings will be key for scavenging.  as for the small bottles of propane there is a nozzle you can buy and make that will let you refill them. how to's can be found on YouTube. along with videos of how to turn empty propane tanks into wood stove. i got two helium tanks I'm saving to do just that. waiting for my dad to finally get the welder for his shop so i can get the job done.

I'm working on getting a pot belly stove...I've always loved them damn things...Something about the smell of the burning wood and the heat during the winter you just can't beat it...

   I will warn you though, the helium tanks, if they are like the ones you can pick up from Wal-mart for party balloons, are mostly to thin to really burn anything in...Not unless you are going to re-enforce the inside...Takes less pressure for a helium tank then lets say and oxygen thank...Which means the oxygen tank will be made from a thicker metal then most helium tanks...

   I small oxygen tank will weigh in around 10 to 20 pounds empty I believe, while a helium tank will only weigh in around 5 maybe 8 pounds empty...So just a little tip when messing with tanks, make sure they are totally empty and that the metal is dense enough to withstand the heat from the burning coals.....

yeah i'll check it out if i have too i can always line the inside bottom with sand. I've seen stoves made out of much thinner metal last for over a year. i know one guy on YouTube makes them out of filing cabinets.

   Now I have seen people build wood burning stoves out of old water heaters.

   It can be done out of just about any metal, but the thinner the metal, the less heat it'll take to compromise the structure.

   The real thing about building something out of thin metal is to insult it the inner part of the stove with something that'll withstand the heat from the coals. You'll have to re-enforce the walls and the bottom of your stove if you're going to use thin metal.

well there was a guy on YouTube who used a mix of sand and and plaster to make a soup can propane forge. i figure if its good enough for that the same mix should do wonders for a wood stove.

You could also use natural clay. If you go to any farm land. It can be found by the tons. Especially in states like Ohio and Tennessee. Our states are practically made of the stuff. Lol

eh this is fine, there's a baseball field right across the street with free sand and you can get plaster anywhere.

Been Awhile, BUt I'm still Alive

Greetings Everyone,    Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
