Homemade Hygiene: Crushed Sage and Peppermint Toothpaste

Homemade Hygiene: Crushed Sage and Peppermint Toothpaste PowderThe last time I went to the store to buy toothpaste, I realized that I was spending upwards of $60-70 a year for something with a bunch of extenders and chemicals I didn’t even want in my body. That’s when I realized that I could probably make something better without any chemicals or extenders for just a few dollars a year… and that’s exactly what I did.

With the high cost of professional dental care and even simple things like toothpaste, good oral health can be hard enough to accomplish on an average day, let alone during times of disaster. This simple, inexpensive and extremely effective Homemade Hygiene product can be put together in just a few minutes with 5 simple ingredients.

CRUSHED SAGE AND PEPPERMINT TOOTHPASTE POWDER
Refreshing and highly helpful for proper dental hygiene, this simple and inexpensive solution will last years, only spoiling if allowed to absorb moisture. This alternative to store-bought pastes contains only what your teeth need and nothing they don’t. It’s both chemical and extender free, making it not only an alternative to store-bought products, but a better solution as well.

Ingredients: (Makes about 1.2 cups)

  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon dried, finely ground sage leaf
  • ½ tablespoon pure sea salt
  • 20-30 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon Xylitol (optional sweetener)

Bentonite clay –Used for literally hundreds of years, this natural clay has the unique ability to bind toxins, helping to remove heavy-metals like mercury and lead from your mouth and body. Rich in minerals, bentonite clay can nourish both your teeth and gums naturally.

Baking soda – Less abrasive than many commercially available toothpaste ingredients, baking soda provides a gentle yet effective scrub for teeth and gums – naturally whitening your smile in the process.

Sage –Recognized all over the world as a perfect alternative to chemical whiteners, Sage also adds a subtle touch of flavor to toothpaste powder.

Sea salt –Helpful for keeping a healthy mouth, pure sea salt provides a gentle scrub while releasing nourishing minerals.

Peppermint essential oil –Antibacterial, antiseptic, pain-relieving and refreshing, peppermint is said to help fight mouth and gum infections. Spearmint and other essential oil clove are great alternatives for non-peppermint lovers.

Xylitol (optional) – While completely optional, Xylitol has been shown to not only sweeten toothpaste powder, but it has many oral health benefits as well.

Directions: Carefully measure all ingredients into a small non-metallic container like a glass jar, seal and shake vigorously to mix. Apply the powder to a wet toothbrush via a small scoop or pinch of powder and scrub away.

After a few test scrubs and tasting, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to buying toothpaste in a tube. This Homemade Hygiene: Crushed Sage and Peppermint Toothpaste isn’t just less expensive, it creates less waste and leaves my mouth feeling as fresh as though I just got back from the dentist… and it’s a great way to avoid having Zombie-breath all day.

This is not the first time I seen this mix. I use this stuff to but I replace the clay with baking powder. More natural to the teeth like the baking soda. But the baking powder helps when it comes the protecting sensitive teeth from hot or cold things. Fills in the porous areas that leads to the exposed nerves that make them sensitive. And unlike clay. It won't promote any decay in those ares.

Homemade Natural Sunscreen.

This sunscreen is water-resistant because of the beeswax and it is super soothing to your skin.  So here you go, this is all you need to make your own homemade natural sunscreen……

What you need:

What you do:

Grab a glass jar,  I have a mason jar reserved for making homemade sunscreen.  Place all of the ingredients, except the zinc oxide, in the jar.

Homemade All-Natural Sunscreen

Loosely screw on the lid.  Now, grab a medium size saucepan and fill it about half-way full or until the water is filled to about 3/4 the height of the jar.  Put your jar in the saucepan of water and place it over medium heat.

Homemade All-Natural Sunscreen

As the jar of goodness starts to heat the ingredients will start to melt.  Shake your jar every few minutes so that everything gets good and mixed up (my son loves doing this!).

Homemade All-Natural Sunscreen

not quite ready.......

Once all of the ingredients are mixed up remove the jar from the heat and stir in the zinc oxide.

Homemade All-Natural Sunscreen

Stir it all together until it is totally mixed up and even then pour it into the containers that you will be storing it in.  I use glass jars, some people prefer plastic.

Homemade All-Natural Sunscreen

Voila!  You now have homemade all-natural sunscreen.

my wife would like this being all natural and having a fair complexion. i will get her this link today.

yeah but where in the hell after the zpoc are you suppose to get coconut oil, she butter, bees wax and zinc oxide. unless your store this stuff in advance its gonna be nearly impossible to find.

Actually unless the salons are raided out. They should be rather easy to find. Plus there are the stores. What is the likelihood of people grabbing this stuff? So finding it and making use of it should be no biggie. Hence still of use. Especially to those who burn in the sun easily.

i don't know about salons but in pretty much every natural disasters where looting was involved the stores are usually picked clean. when people freak out they'll just try to grab anything and everything. and as the places get emptier and emptier they'll just take what ever's left. as for natural sunscreen go old school charcoal and water, or mud. thats about as natural as it gets and it's been done for thousands of years by man and beast.

Homemade Natural Bug Spray

My family and I live in Florida.  We have beautiful beaches and rivers to explore.  We also have bugs, lots and lots of bugs.   Bug spray is often a necessity when venturing outdoors.  I seem to be a magnet for mosquitos, if there is one in the area it will bite me multiple times, Audrey seems to be the same way.  I refuse to stay indoors to avoid the many pesky bugs outdoors and I also refuse to cover my skin in chemicals.  This is why I make my own homemade natural bug spray.

By making my own natural bug spray I can be sure that I am not spraying toxic chemicals on my family.  Are you aware that your skin is your largest organ and chemicals can be absorbed through your skin and into your blood stream.  These chemicals can cause toxic effects to your body.  Deet is a commonly used ingredient in most commercial bug sprays and I avoid it completely.

I refuse to use DEET, this website sums up why:

the most serious danger by far has nothing to do with the West Nile Virus but instead is posed by the pesticides we use to keep the mosquitoes away. And while you likely don’t have much control over the community-wide fogging geared at reducing mosquitoes (other than running indoors and making sure all your windows are tightly shut), you do have control over the pesticides you use personally.

Most insect repellents out there are loaded with toxic chemicals, including the pesticide DEET, which is so poisonous that even the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you return indoors, avoid breathing it in and not spray it directly on your face. Think about it–if this chemical can kill mosquitoes, it can likely do some harm to other life forms too.

Making your own homemade natural bug spray is easy.  It is also extremely cost-effective when you compare to the prices of the over-the-counter natural bug sprays.  You need only a few simple ingredients and a spray bottle.

What you need:

  • Distilled (or boiled) water
  • Natural Witch Hazel
  • Vegetable glycerine (you can omit this if you desire)
  • Essential oils:  I use Citronella, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Lavendar, Litsea, Tea Tree, Patchouli, and Catnip

What you do:

  • Fill an 8 ounce spray bottle halfway with distilled water
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of Glycerine Vegetable
  • Fill almost to the top with natural Witch Hazel
  • Add 50 drops of essential oils.

See, super easy and I promise you it will keep the bugs off!

also burning sage or rosemary in your fire is a great way to keep your camp mosquito free. little vampires hate the stuff and it leaves behind a pleasant smell.

a lot of people use a dryer sheet to repel mosquitos. they put them in shirt pockets, under hats or anywhere body heat can begin to help emit the scent of the dryer sheet. works like a charm.

yeah i heard of that

i use this every time i go fishing in the summer. works like a charm. the only thing you need to remember to do afterward is have some dirt on hand. that way once you get done handling the dryer sheet. you can rub the dirt on your hands to get rid of the dryer sheet smell from them. if you dont and then handle bait. the smell of the dryer sheet will be on your hands and transfer to the bait and the fish wont touch it. to add to the removal of the dryer sheet sent from your hands. after rubbing dirt on them. wash the dirt off with natural pond water. totally removes the dryer sheet scent and masks any remaining human scent. after that, just bait up the hooks and pull in that dream catfish. lol. works every time.

Aaahhh, King weeble smells April fresh...(LOL)

Been Awhile, BUt I'm still Alive

Greetings Everyone,    Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
