No blood drippings from their chins, skin hanging loose off their face, no white eyeballs or the stench of rotted flesh. the Mountaineer (5)

Ken climbed down from his protected perch to get a closer look at the 'dead' zombies sprawled about on the valley floor. Among the group, he spotted the dark green fabric of a forest service uniform. It reminded him that the forest service maintained a nearby fire lookout tower on Danskin Peak. He felt certain that his panicked flight two nights before had taken him eastward, but not as far as the south fork of the Boise River. Not too far to be lost. Danskin Peak was most likely a few miles north of his current location. It was possible that he might find other survivors and a safe haven there. The hills leading to the top were steep with treacherous rocky footing and the service road was narrow, winding and equally treacherous; a good place to hold back the hordes.

A modest cabin was integrated into the base of the tower's foundation. Both were solidly constructed of heavy basalt and rough cement. Heaps of dead bodies were littered in front of the cabin's open entryway. Looking past the heaps, Ken saw even more bodies piled within the building's gloomy interior. Not wanting to venture over the mutilated bodies of the dead or to risk receiving even a minor scratch from the zombie infected corpses, he decided to look for some other route to access the tower. Avoiding the carnage, he walked around the building and found an old wooden ladder attached to the backside of the building. The white paint of the ladder was peeling with age, but it looked sturdy enough to support his weight and led up to the tower's observation deck.

Ken made his way back to the ladder and climbed back down from the tower. Following his route back the way he had come, he stopped to inspect some of the bodies for anything of value. It was obvious, however, that the bodies had already been searched. Their pockets were turned out and worthless personal effects had been tossed unceremoniously to the side. Expensive golden rings and necklaces had been left untouched. He spotted a wallet with a thick wad of cash poking from the fold lying upon the ground and, after a brief moment of pre-apocalypse temptation passed, he left it where it lay. Wealth as he knew it in the past was worthless. Survival couldn't be purchased downtown anymore. Even gold, the standard of wealth that had stood firm for thousands of years was now meaningless in the age of the zombies. After checking only a few bodies he quit searching and turned away from the tower.

Ken dropped his pack and pulled his own rifle free. He slipped a round into the chamber and sighted on the zombie. Through his rifle’s scope he could clearly see the approaching zombie. It seemed to be a fairly intact. It was a man wearing a complete set of old army green camouflage, from the hat on its head to the green jungle boots on its feet. His right leg, from knee to ankle, was stripped of flesh, the fabric of the pants ripped and frayed.
He adjusted the cross-hairs of the rifle sight to place them directly on the zombie’s forehead. Squeezing the trigger slowly, he fired a round. The rifle kicked into his shoulder with a loud “Boom.” Dust plumed on the hillside nearly three feet to the left of the zombie. Ken cursed. He had adjusted the sights of the scope himself and knew that they were ‘dead-on’ accurate. He cursed again when he realized that they had probably been knocked out of alignment when he and Janine had wrested, or when she been caught in the fence.
There, on the eastern rim, he took a moment to look around. To the west, he saw his past. In his thoughts, the west represented who he was. His old life lay there. His old life and the most important parts of that life, his wife and daughter, had been abandoned and left to rot away on a deserted dirt trail. He felt a momentary pang of guilt for not burying them, but he had done what he had done and he couldn’t change it now. The monsters that they had become were not the sweet, innocent and caring people that had once been his loving family.
He looked eastward past the mysterious confines of the town of Prairie and saw the mountains continuing to rise in the distance. If his old life had ended, then it was time for his new life to begin. The lands to the East were unknown to him, new. They would be a perfect place for a beginning.

Ken stopped and listened. He had been so focused on treating Rachel's wounds that he had tuned out everything else around them. The moan of the zombies, while still distant, echoed to him from every direction. His skin crawled as his memory flashed to the night that he had fled his camp. He took a deep breath and suppressed the mounting fear. Looking at Rachel, he asked, “I thought the Prairie men had cleared out the zombies from around here.”
“They have, for the most part," she answered, "but they still wander into the area. Some of them even make it across the river, or the reservoir. Some are hold outs from the campgrounds or survivors that made it deep into the mountains, before being found by the zombies. All it takes is one bite, one bite when you've finally succumbed to exhaustion and can't run any more. They'll find you. We also happen to be outside of Prairie’s main patrol area. They don’t come out here unless they're looking for something, or someone.”
“So where are we going?” asked Ken.
She pointed across the reservoir, “Over there. The mining camp is about five miles up the road. It was in full operation until the zombies came.”
Ken then stated the obvious, “But the bridge is out...”

Greetings Everyone, Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
