YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

BETTER TO BE FAT OR SKINNY?

BETTER TO BE FAT OR SKINNY?

Conventional wisdom says that being fit and skinny is an important part of any zombie survival plan. Even the hit movie Zombieland makes clear that the first rule in outlasting the undead is to work on your cardio. But what if conventional wisdom is wrong?  What if carrying a few extra pounds is better for survival?

Looking at the three stages of human starvation we find that in the first stage blood glucose levels are maintained by the liver, but because there is only enough stored glycogen to last a few hours the body quickly moves into the second stage.  Nutritionist Kevin Quirk explains that this is when a person’s fat percentage comes into play.

“The body begins to convert its fat reserves into fatty acids and glycerol to support muscle and brain function. Once the fat runs out, the third stage of starvation begins, and there is a switch to proteins as the major energy source. Muscles, the largest source of protein in the body, are rapidly depleted.”

Needless to say, once your muscles are being eaten from within you’re in big trouble. In fact, starvation-related death is often caused by heart failure, because the heart muscle is broken down to the point of collapse.

Quirk explains that individuals with higher levels of body fat can last longer without food, because they remain in the second stage of starvation for more time than their skinny counterparts. It’s not unlike a camel in the desert that is able to supply energy to the body by using up ample stores of fat.

Of course, if you’re being chased by zombies it doesn’t hurt to be able to run fast and for long distances, not to mention the added physical and psychological benefits of being in top condition. But if you’re locked in a safe place and forced to stay put long  after food supplies have been depleted, you’re clearly better off packing at least a few extra pounds.

Food for thought.

there so many pros and cons to the physical being. the best zombie guide i ever read sums the 3 body types up and their strengths and weaknesses in great detail. The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger Ma. even goes into what are the best combat strategies are for them as well. love that book.

yeah and i know from personal experience as a big guy i can go a month without eating and still be ready to fight.

Advantages to being fat:
-Can survive longer without food.

Disadvantages:
-Can't move when need to do
-will be eaten quicker if there's cannibalism
-most obese people have complications that require medicine

Advantages for being skinny:
-Can move faster than fat people
-no one will want to eat you

Disadvantages
-won't survive long without food
-will get beaten down by the fat guy in a fight

***Best scenario...toned with muscle and in good cardiovascular shape.

-stronger
-faster
-healthier

I would rather have a little meat on my bones. In any type of survival situation having a few extra pounds could be the difference between life and DEATH.

this discussion has weighed on my mind for several days now. guess its just one of those things that just dont go away so easily. lol. so i decided to post up what the great Roger Ma had to say on the 3 major body types. to me, this says it all. and i shall post each type as i can. here is the first.

The Ectocombatant
Traits: Thin, Light of Musculature.
Strengths: Endurance, Speed, Stealth
Weaknesses: Lack of strength and power, Low body fat

With a wiry frame and lean physique, the ectocombatant's greatest assets are his or her endurance - two of the most important benefits during a siege. Surviving during a zombie outbreak has often been linked to a marathon race, so what better physique than that of a long distance runner? With an abundance of energy and stamina, the ectocombatant is able to constantly stay one step ahead of his or her hungry predators. Because of their narrow build, ectos with superior dexterity have been known to effectively navigate through a room packed with zombies and still avoid getting mauled.

In offensive maneuvers, the ectocombatants need to be more cautious. Their lighter frames often do not pack a large quantity of muscle, making it more difficult to execute combat techniques that require a greater amount of strength or momentum. Long-distance techniques generally do not work as well for the endocombatant, as these weapons are often heavier and require some degree of centrifugal force. Engaging multiple attackers is also discouraged, as the endocombatant may not be ableto execute a long series of consecutive, neutralizing blows repeatedly without becoming exhausted. Interestingly, combat statistics reveal that ectos are odten more successful in close-quarters against the undead, perhaps because of their speed and their thinner appendages, which may become more difficult for a ghoul to grasp.

The ectocombatant also needs to be almost neurotically vigilant with his or her food supplyduring large-scale zombie infestations. The lack of adipose tissue on the body means that without a constant supply of energy, individuals with this physical type will rapidly begin to cannibalize muscle tissue for fuel, leaving the ecto dizzy, light-headed, and in a weaker more vulnerable state. It is difficult enough facing attackers that seek to devour your flesh, there's no need to prompt ones own body to do so as well.

Roger Ma - The Zombie Combat Manual

here is the second of 3 body types.

Mesocombatant

Traits: Athletic, Solid Musculature

Strengths: Balanced Levels of Strength and Speed

Weaknesses: Lower Body Fat Levels

The mesocombatant has the benefit of being the most adaptable body type to all forms of zombie combat. This physique has the strength and weight to execute techniques that require greater amounts of power, as well as the stamina to endure extended evasive maneuvers. Its no wonder that individuals involved in various types of combat activities - boxers, soldiers, and martial artists - often exhibit this type of body structure.

Given the balanced nature of the mesocombatant, individuals with this body type can from a variety of offensive techniques to suit their personal style. Mesos typically preform in all combat ranges - long, medium and close combat. However, this equal physical distribution also means that mesos may suffer from being a "jack of all Trades, master of none" when it comes to battling the undead. They may never be as fast as the lithe ectocombatant, nor will they have the weight to execute long-ranged techniques that the endocombatant can preform flawlessly.

Like ectocombatants, mesos need to be keenly aware of their food supply during an outbreak, given their low body fat levels. This may even be a greater concern for the mesocombatant, as the larger amount of muscle on the frame means that the body requires a greater caloric intake simply to maintain weight. Any loss of muscle due to lack of nourishment means a less effective combatant

Roger Ma - The Zombie Combat Manual

here is the third of 3.

Endocombatant
Traits: Heavier Build, Rounder Physique
Strengths: Energy Storage, Power, Leverage
Weaknesses: Lack of Speed and Endurance

With a larger build and ample energy stores, the endocombatant is well suited to survive a supply shortage during an undead plague. Athletes in the endocombatant range include sumo wrestlers, football linemen, and some professional wrestlers.

Unlike the other two combatant types, the endocombatant can draw upon his or her larger adipose reserves should food sources become scarce. In fact, studies have determined that well-trained endos have the highest survivability rate of all three body classifications during long-term zombie outbreaks because they can sustain themselves for the protracted duration. After extended sieges, many observed mesocombatants were in fact former endos whose body fat stores were depleted during the lengthily episode.

Because of their larger size, endocombatants are better suited to using weapons and techniques that take advantage of their heavier weight. Endos seem to fare particularly well with long-range tactics, where they can put the full force of their girth behind the weapon. Stronger endos also have the ability to burst through hoards of undead attackers, much the same way a football linebacker can breach the crush of several opponents.

Their large size and slower speed, however, makes the endocombatant more vulnerable in close-combat situations, as more flesh is available to grab and attack. It is advised that endocombatants avoid close-quarters engagements if at all possible. Endos also need to develop their endurance to the levels of their ecto and meso counterparts, as they do not want to be responsible for slowing down an entire group with the undead in hot pursuit.

Roger Ma - The Zombie Combat Manual

So when it comes down to it. It seems to me that even though it will take ALL KINDS of body types to fight off and survive the zombie apocalypse. It also seems to me that it will rest more on the shoulders of the big guys like myself, Jessie Garrett and Saint. At least that is in my humble opinion.

yeah i remember seeing this thing on tv about a guy who swam the English channel. he started out with a big pot belly but by the time he finished he was skinny. because for a huge exertion like that you can't rely on carbohydrates alone. you need fat to act as a backup. you know hitting the wall where your body changes what it uses for fuel. and they say in the past the caveman probably looked a lot like that guy. always carrying around some extra weight to help them during extreme situations.

Hey, Hey, Hey....

I haven't gotten that far in the book yet...Don't ruin my surprises....(ROFLMAO)

I can definitely agree though...My step-son, who's 16, can run for a longer period of time, but runs out of energy so damn quick, that it seems he's eating all the time...Longer bursts of energy but tends to need more food then others to maintain that energy...While us FLUFFY guys tend to have shorter bursts of energy but the need for food is less...Unless you are like those fucking movie stereotypical fat bastards that just eat everything in site because they're just plain ass greedy...

So to have some meat on your bones, with the physical attributes of some athleticism could increase your survival rating to damn near 100% with the proper training, preps and even maintaining a slightly overweight physical appearance...

But hey, I like the way I look and just because I'm Fluffy doesn't mean you can be mean to me...Just remember, I may be fat, but at least I can go on a diet, you just can't fix UGLY.....(LOL)

Plus two, I like a little meat on my women's bones, more cushion for the pushin....Oh hell did I just say that out loud...Shit....

   ROFLMAO

yup yup. you said that out loud bro. now if you grease the right palms. i wont send your wife the screen shot i just took of this post. SHINY!!! LMAO!!!! *runs for cover before the brick is air born*

(LOL)  You freakin goof ball...(LOL) Hell if you want my wife I'll let you have her, just no giving her back...(ROFLMAO)

Been Awhile, BUt I'm still Alive

Greetings Everyone,    Well it's been awhile. As things go, life carries us all in different directions from time to time but you always find your way home sooner or later. Well, life ain't all fun and games, but right now, things are going good. I have restarted my writing on my book again, and as I learn more about about some of the ROle-playing games I have gotten into, I am seriously thinking about rying to create an actual Zombie Survival Role-playing game. But have not set any time…
